The much hyped Girls album, Album, leaked a recently to glowing praise, which included a cover story in the most recent edition of Fader. Chet “JR” White and Christopher Owens (who also plays in Holy Shit with Ariel Pink and Matt Fishbeck) are at the core of Girls, a summery pop band based out of San Francisco. Musically, the band is not incredibly groundbreaking, but that is their greatest selling point. Many of these songs’ chord progressions are directly taken from some timeless songs. Many times, it sound like you’re listening to a de-tuned radio playing The Beach Boys. I’m quite sure that this is going to go over well in the indie rock community because it’s likely Pitchfork will give it Best New Music, propelling the band into even higher levels of acclaim. It seems like a lot of bands like this are popping up left and right though, doesn’t it? It’s not that I’m complaining, but there seems to be a bit of a garage rock/flower pop revival going on in 2009 via Black Lips/The Strange Boys/Girls/Smith Westerns. I guess it just goes to show you that some things are timeless, and pop rock is definitely one of those things. Though it is often diluted by mediocre crap, it’s interesting to see a new generations take on a style that was pioneered before they were even born. If you enjoy it, pre-order it.

This album is scheduled to be released on September 22nd, 2009.

Daikaiju – Daikaiju

Daikaiju actually means “giant monster”, which is fitting for this Alabama surf rock group. Their worship of Japanese monster movies definitely has affected their sound, giving it a more epic, kitschy sound. I love surf rock, though I struggle to find quality material, other than the essentials. I also happen to love Japanese monster movies, so finding Daikaiju was a blessing! Beneath the mysterious masks the members don, beneath the outlandish monikers they use, this is an excellent debut from a talented band, making high-impact surf rock for sci-fi nerds. If this sounds appealing, GET THIS. If this does not sound appealing, go watch Godzilla then GET THIS.
