This new OM album leaked a few days ago, but I haven’t seen it posted, partially because I don’t follow many blogs posting doom drone and whatnot, but decided to post to give some more heaviness to the people who actually download our stuff. Anyway, OM is a doom metal/drone band rising from the ashes of stoner metal legends Sleep, only to the play with a more drone- and Middle Eastern-influenced sound. After one listen so far, I don’t really know how I would rank this against their other albums, they are all so consistent and this one seems to follow that pattern perfectly. Perfect for those times when your drone needs a little boost or when your metal needs to take a meditative turn or just for when you’re smoking hookah. With this album, OM also switched labels: from metal heavyweights Southern Lord to Drag City, home to many pysch and folk acts. For those of you in New York, OM is playing with Six Organs of Admittance and Lichens on October 13 at the Bowery Ballroom.

It seems that with the summer nearing, every year I find myself revisiting early garage and psychedelic rock, with this year being no exception. I present to you Bubble Puppy, a great 60’s pyschedelic rock band with a God-awful name. Signed to the same label as legends such as 13th Floor Elevators and Red Krayola, Bubble Puppy create very straightforward garage-influenced psychedelic rock that seems perfectly fitted for the incoming summer. They achieved minor success with the first track on the album, “Hot Smoke and Sassafrass”, which I’m sure some of you will recognize. For some reason, this style of music seems very American to me, so I figured everyone could enjoy it on Memorial Day as well.

Eureka Brown is a young man (with a drummer) creating sunny, psychedelic pop that sounds like Black Moth Super Rainbow covering Beck. And the best part of it all is that it’s free. Yes, not only is the music great, but you can nab the album for free! Mixing pyschedelic music, dub, pop, Tropicalia and lo-fi Eureka Brown has created what is already one of my favorite albums of this year. Clocking in at exactly 20 minutes, this mini-album is perfect for driving around on those sunny days, just enjoying life. Even on the first listen, you will find yourself feeling like you’ve known each song for years, which gives the album even more of a personal feel. Warm synths, sunny organs, fuzzy guitars and sun-drenched drums will leave you wanting more.
