Sub Verso – Within The Hour EP

November 1, 2009 James Leave a comment

WithintheHour

I was recently emailed by the drummer of Sub Verso who conjssider themselves a post punk band, though I wouldn’t really pigeon hole them into any single genre. It’s a pleasant mix of synths in the background, shimmering guitars, and smooth vocals that somehow remind me of Native. The band recorded this debut EP with Ryan Stack who has worked with The Effort, Watchfire, The Nasty, Late Nite Wars, and My Heart To Joy. This release is being put out as a 10″ for only $6 and though it is set to be released on New Year’s Day, the guys seem to be sending these out ASAP.

Bibio – The Apple & The Tooth

October 23, 2009 James Leave a comment

WARP190

That’s right, I’m serving up even more Bibio. I swear, this guy must work like a machine to keep his steady rate of output. This time, it’s another Warp release with 4 orginal songs and 8 remixes by Clark, Wax Stag, Eskmo, Leaterette, The Genleman Loser’s Whispers in The Rain, Lone, Keaver & Brause, and even Bibio himself. The album is being released on CD and a limited pressing of 1000 albums on 12″ vinyl in a gold foil embellished sleeve. I’m definitely going to be pre-ordering my copy when I get paid in a week. You should definitely be doing the same.

This album is scheduled to be released by Warp Records on November 10th, 2009.

White Rainbow – New Clouds

October 6, 2009 James 1 comment

white-rainbow

I was pleasantly surprised to see that the new White Rainbow album had leaked today. I actually had no idea that he was releasing an album anytime soon. I have yet to listen to the 4 tracks that span over an hour of listening time, but if Prism Of Eternal Now is any indicator, this is sure to be an album to pick up.

This album is scheduled to be released by Kranky on October 19.

Old Canes – Feral Harmonic

October 1, 2009 James 1 comment

oldcanescover

Old Canes is the side-project of The Appleseed Cast frontman Christopher Crisci. The first album released by the band, Early Morning Hymns, was released way back in 2004 and the guys are just now getting around to releasing the new album. Although they started working on this record in 2005, the members are all splitting their time with their other projects, namely The Appleseed Cast, Minus Story, and Casket Lottery, which made recording a bit chaotic.  The band is going on a US tour throughout October in support of the album, which is being released by Saddle Creek.

This album is scheduled to be released by Saddle Creek Records on October 20, 2009.

Thao With The Get Down Stay Down – Know Better Learn Faster

thao-know-better-learn-faster

There are few albums that hook me as hard as Know Better Learn Faster has. I challenge you to listen to this album and refrain from tapping along-something I am failing to do as I sit in CSU’s library. Thao Nguyen describes her new album as “an undercurrent of frenzied helplessness” and that description certainly holds true in this listeners opinion, but the album is much more joyous than that statement may have you believe. The 13 songs fill your ears with folky pop glory from beginning to end.

This album is scheduled to be released by Kill Rock Stars on October 13, 2009.

Hudson Mohawke – Butter

September 29, 2009 James 1 comment

hudson-mohawke-butter

Hudson Mohawke is Ross Birchard, a young producer making his mark on the blogging commuinity. The man was first signed to Warp in 2007 and has been mixing sensational beats for them ever since. Up until this point, he has released various EP’s and 12″ splits, but this is (to my knowledge) his first full length album. Arguably one of the coolest things about this release is the deluxe edition’s packaging. If you’re willing to drop $50 on this release, BLEEP will send you the album and a t-shirt in a butter tub-that’s right, a butter tub. They even have a diagram you can view here. If you enjoy this release, check out Brian’s write up of his Polyfolk Dance EP over at When We Were Younger and Better.

This album is scheduled to be released by Warp Records on October 26, 2009.

Karen O And The Kids – Where The Wild Things Are OST

September 27, 2009 James 3 comments

Picture 1

If I had to choose my favorite children’s book, it would be a tie between Where The Wild Things Are and The Giving Tree. When I first heard that Spike Jonze would be directing a live action film, my interest was piqued. When I saw the trailer for the first time, I got goosebumps all over my arm. A few weeks later, I read on Pitchfork that Spike Jonze had enlisted Karen O of Yeah Yeah Yeahs to compose music for the film and that she had used her extensive connections in the underground music community to enlist a rag-tag group of musicians, which includes members of Deerhunter, Liars, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and an untrained children’s choir, among others. The resulting 14 tracks compose what is likely to be the slow-burner of the year. The unexpected or half forgotten album that drops early 4th quarter and snags best of lists across the blogosphere at the end of the year. I say this not because of the reputable artists behind the project, but because it’s one of the few albums of the year that has a clear and organic flow. If you weren’t already dying to see this movie on October 16th, you are now.

This album is scheduled to be released on September 29, 2009.

Thom Yorke – Feeling Pulled Apart By Horses 12″

September 20, 2009 James 1 comment

feelingpulledapartbyhorses

When Thom Yorke of Radiohead announced via the band’s blog that he would be releasing a new 12″ limited to 8,000 copies, I was among the first to drop over $20 on it. How could I pass up the chance to own the long awaited release of Feeling Pulled Apart By Horses, a song that the band had been experimenting with for almost a decade? I have a live version of the song from a performance in Washington on June 23rd, 2001 and it’s a completely different song. The only similarity is the bass line, though it is much less pronounced and heavy in this release. Instead, Thom wrote a 6 1/2 minute song as eclectic as you would expect from the man. The vocal delivery is probably the most noticeable change however. Thom’s raspy growls and screams that cut through heavy riffs are replaced with echoey vocals that simmer on top of the electronic beats. Near the end of the song, the synth leads take over and Thom’s voice is left behind to reverberate under the surface. The b-side, The Hollow Earth is certainly much more upbeat and almost purely electronic. It’s basically a fast idm beat that Thom sings over. I can’t wait to play this on my record player when it finally gets here in a week or so.

Monsters Of Folk – Monsters Of Folk

September 15, 2009 James 2 comments

monstersoffolk-art

By now, you’ve all heard of the powerhouse super-group Monsters Of Folk, which includes Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis of Bright Eyes, along with M. Ward of solo and She & Him Fame, and Jim James of My Morning Jacket. This is the kind of release that people generally only dream about and it lives up to all of my expectations. It’s a sprawling album that brings out the talents of some of the most celebrated musicians in modern folk music. There is really no reason why I should try to convince you any more, just download it already.

This album is scheduled to be released on September 22, 2009 by Rough Trade Records.

Neon Indian – Psychic Chasms

September 10, 2009 James 5 comments

Neon Indian is Alan Palomo, who also uses the alias Vega. On October 13th, he will release this album on Lefse Records. The album is a mix of electronic pop and beefy psychedelic guitar overtones make for the perfect dance beat. Imagine if Ratatat got really fucking blazed with Berlin-era Bowie and they decided to make a mix-tape for a club. This is that album. The artist has already received nods by Pitchfork and Stereogum. The good thing is that the album actually does live up to the hype, so download this shit, invite some friends over, and have a party.

This album is scheduled to be released by Lefse Records on October 13, 2009.

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart – Higher Than The Stars EP

September 6, 2009 James 4 comments

higher

When The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart released their self titled debut album in February, it took the internet by storm. In fact, it’s still hard to find a blog that isn’t writing about the Shoegaze band from New York City. Not to be outdone, the band are set to release this EP on September 22nd. There is definitely a more electronic feel to the sound, which isn’t a surprise to anyone privy to their side project The Depreciation Guild. I’ve been looking forward to this EP ever since first hearing the songs live at Pitchfork Music Festival this summer.

This EP is set to be released on September 22, 2009.

OM – God Is Good

September 5, 2009 maxmellman 1 comment

This new OM album leaked a few days ago, but I haven’t seen it posted, partially because I don’t follow many blogs posting doom drone and whatnot, but decided to post to give some more heaviness to the people who actually download our stuff. Anyway, OM is a doom metal/drone band rising from the ashes of stoner metal legends Sleep, only to the play with a more drone- and Middle Eastern-influenced sound. After one listen so far, I don’t really know how I would rank this against their other albums, they are all so consistent and this one seems to follow that pattern perfectly. Perfect for those times when your drone needs a little boost or when your metal needs to take a meditative turn or just for when you’re smoking hookah. With this album, OM also switched labels: from metal heavyweights Southern Lord to Drag City, home to many pysch and folk acts. For those of you in New York, OM is playing with Six Organs of Admittance and Lichens on October 13 at the Bowery Ballroom.

Flight Of The Conchords – I Told You I Was Freaky

September 3, 2009 James 1 comment

flight-conchords-i_told-you-_i_was_freaky

Bret and Jemaine will release their second full length album with Sub Pop on October 20th. The album contains songs heard on the second season of their now finished television show. Among the subjects discussed by the New Zealand folk-pop-comedy duo are sensitive rappers, Jemaine’s Sugalumps, missed romantic connections, overabundance’s of wiener in clubs, and cannibalistic castaways. Get it while it’s good because it’s sure to be taken down.

This album is scheduled to be released by Sup-Pop on October 20, 2009
